Protecting the Future with Reusable Shopping Bags

According to global statistics consumption of plastic bags is between 500 billion and a trillion every year or a million bags every minute. It is hardly surprising therefore, that many communities, including the state of South Australia (see South Australia Bans Plastic Bags), are moving to ban plastic bags.

There are two ways of addressing this environmental problem.

Reusable Shopping Bags

The huge consumption of plastic bags results from the fact that these bags are commonly used only once before being disposed of. This huge consumption can only be addressed by using durable reusable shopping bags which have a long life span and therefore can be repeatedly reused. This will result in a proportional decrease in consumption as compared to the use of single use plastic bags.

The second alternative is to use biodegradable bags.

Biodegradable or Compostable Bags

As an alternative to durable reusable shopping bags many companies supply bags made from biodegradable plastics. While these bags may compost rapidly under certain conditions, unsuitable conditions will result in more prolonged breakdown and more environmental accumulation of these bags.

But the main problem with biodegradable bags is the fact that their short useful life span means consumption of bags would be significantly increased as compared to durable reusable shopping bags. Compared to the use of reusable shopping bags there would therefore be much more litter produced and much more resources and energy used in production.

It is for the above reasons that most experts today recommend the use of durable reusable shopping bags.
